Description
Poynter responds to Fairfax Murray's complaint about the removal of the picture attributed to Vermeer [Possibly by Michiel Nouts 'A Family Group' (NG1699)] that he had donated. He doubts the picture is by Vermeer as the style of the costume is 'of a character some thirty years' before the artist's time. Furthermore, the picture was displayed in a crowded room, and he needed space for new acquisitions. Although Lord Carlisle and (J.P.) Heseltine admired it as a work of art, they agreed that the picture should be replaced.
