Description
A series of ledger volumes containing indexed accounts of clients registered with Agnew's London branch (1873-1972). Common transactions include the sale of works of art, framing, insurance, and conveyancing. The London branch was a Gallery premises (either rented or owned outright by the Agnew family) variously at Waterloo Place, 39 (later 43) Old Bond Street, and Albemarle Street. The ledgers contain the following information for debits (on the left hand side of each page) and credits (right hand side):
- Date
- Description (e.g. Picture; Cash)
- Day Book volume and page number (or equivalent volume, e.g. Cash Book; these have not been retained by the archive).
- Amount
Notes:
- See NGA27/14 for more information about Ledgers in general.
- Client accounts recorded in earlier ledgers from other series (for example, Manchester, 'S', Liverpool or Miscellaneous) may be transferred to or from the London Ledgers. There is no exact rule for where a client's account is recorded, as it would have depended on which employee handled their business with the firm.
