Description

From Hotel de la Ville, Milan [in Lady Eastlake's hand]: Eastlake has received Wornum's letters of September 13 and October 3. He gives detailed instructions for Pinti's varnishing of the Sebastiano del Piombo (NG1). The Gerolamo dai Libri (NG748) and the two Giolfinis (NG749) will be packed today. He gives a description of the Gerolamo for the catalogue and instructions for Pinti to restore it. He gives information on the Giolfinis. He thinks that the Gerolamo has been relined by Molteni; Eastlake refused to have a frame made for it in Italy, but Molteni has had a drawing made of a frame composed of Bramantesque materials and this, with other drawings of frames, is in the case. Eastlake had virtually bought a Cavazzola in Verona (?NG777) but now has made an offer for the Mocenigo Carpaccio (NG750), which he thinks is an important picture, and therefore there are not enough funds. He cannot negotiate for the Signorelli in Florence (not acquired) and it is impossible to get an answer about the Cima in Venice (not acquired). He points out that there is an inscription on the Gerolamo (NG748).
