Photograph of a drawing by George Scharf. Signed, inscribed and dated August 1826. 139 x 305 mm. Original in the British Museum, book 4, p.3 (7). Illustration from 'George Scharf's London' by Peter Jackson, 1987, p.29. The Act of 31 May 1826 authorised the demolition of buildings in front of St Martin's so that, with Regent Street finished, John Nash could carry out 'the continuation of Pall Mall into St Martin's Lane, terminating at the Portico of St Martin's Church.' This view shows the College of Physicians and the cupola of the King's Mews (designed by William Kent in 1732). The buildings in the left foreground are part of the old barracks and the backs of the premises of Havard & Nixon's, the builders and carpenters. Copy photograph: National Gallery. Neg. M1257.
