General correspondence from 1955 relating to the Velazquez while it was on loan to the Gallery from the Woodall Trust. Correspondence includes a reproduction request from the Knights of St. Columba, who wish to use The Immaculate Conception in a prayer card. The owners of the picture must be contacted in order to acquire reproduction permissions, Mrs P. Woodall is therefore approached by the Gallery. Standard letter from the Gallery informing the owners that their picture would be of interest to the Gallery if it was ever to be sold, with response dated 16 August 1967 which states that the picture is likely to be sold within the next few years and the Gallery will be the first to be consulted on the matter. Letter to the Gallery from Cripps Harries Willis and Carter solicitors, dated 4 June 1973, explaining that the Woodall Trust beneficiaries wish to sell the Valazquez within the next three years. Advance notice is being given to enable the Gallery to organise the purchase of the picture, as the beneficiaries would prefer the picture to remain in the UK and within the National Gallery. The solicitors suggest that the Gallery should propose a valuer for the picture, James Byam Shaw is subsequently recommended by the Gallery. Correspondence discussing the possible source of funds for the acquisition between the Trustees, Chariman and Director. Discussion of the potential price of the picture, with views on the possible implications of Estate Duty and capital gains tax.
