On-going correspondence regarding the potential campaign to save the Titian and the possibility of a larger government grant, to be added to money raised through a campaign. Correspondence with the Pilgrim Trust regarding a potential contribution towards the campaign, £50,000 contribution is confirmed, provided that the remaining amount needed is successfully raised. Notes of a meeting at Chequers, 24 August 1971, with Prime Minister, Lord Eccles and John Witt among those in attendance, discussion of government position regarding a special grant. Minutes from emergency Board meeting on 18 October 1971 to discuss government offer of support for the acquisition, which will involve using a proportion of the Gallery's purchase grant for the next three years. Final arrangements suggested as £400,000 from Gallery funds, 100,000 from NACF, 50,000 from Pilgrim Trust, 600,000 advance from future purchase grants and 613,000 by public appeal, with purchase grant for the next four years being borrowed from. The government also commits to pay half of the amount needed to be made from public donations (matching donations pound for pound).
