Niccolò di Pietro Gerini, 'Adoration of the Shepherds', 1383
About the work
Overview
A peaceful night scene unfolds in this small panel showing Christ’s birth. The Virgin Mary sits on the ground, cradling baby Jesus. They shelter in an open-sided barn built outside the city walls. Behind them, the ox and the ass peer out from a cave. Jesus’ father, Joseph, dozes. Beside him lie his water flask and a walking stick for carrying the family’s belongings.
On the left, an angel guides two shepherds down from the hills around Bethlehem to worship the newborn child. This follows the story told in the Christian Bible (Luke 2:8–20). The angel told them the Messiah had been born and was lying in a manger.
This panel was painted by the Florentine artist Niccolò di Pietro Gerini. It was part of the lower tier of a large multi-panelled altarpiece, made for the church of Santa Maria di Monticelli in Florence in 1383. The main panel showing the Virgin and Child (Galleria dell’Accademia, Florence) is attributed to Jacopo di Cione.
