Sample

To learn about a painting’s layer structure and its constituent parts, it is usually necessary to take a miniscule sample for examination and analysis. These samples typically measure less than 0.25 mm across (an average grain of table salt is about 0.3 mm across). Samples are only taken from areas of pre-existing damage or at the very edge of the painting, from an area hidden by the frame.
