St Andrew

Andrew was the first disciple called by Jesus Christ. He was a fisherman, and brought his brother Simon (Saint Peter) to Jesus. He continued to be present throughout Jesus' ministry, but accounts of his life in the early Church are vague.

There is a tradition that Andrew was martyred on an X-shaped cross, but it dates only from the Middle Ages. He is the patron saint of Scotland. His emblem is a saltire (X-shaped cross), which appears in the flags of both Scotland and the United Kingdom (the Union Jack).
