An architectural feature, normally triangular, which rests on the entablature. Its central section, called the tympanum, often contains low-relief sculptural decoration. Originally found on Ancient Greek and Roman temples, it was adopted for use in elite residences in the Italian Renaissance, most famously in the villas of Andrea Palladio.
