A catalyst increases the rate of a chemical reaction, without itself being consumed in the reaction. Certain metal compounds can act as a catalyst in the ‘drying’ (polymerisation) of oils and may have been added to the paint deliberately for this purpose. Some pigments can also act as catalysts in the polymerisation of oil and are therefore known as ‘good driers’.
