About

In an interplay of light and darkness, Joseph Wright of Derby conjures the sublime.

Christine Riding, Director of Collections and Research, leads this early-access online Members’ talk and Q&A for 'Wright of Derby: From the Shadows’. Join Christine as she introduces Wright of Derby and this focussed exhibition dedicated to his ‘candlelight’ paintings.

You will see illuminated faces gathered around objects of spectacle and science. Consider the questions of morality the artist evokes as we watch, along with the people in his paintings, at the sombre and sublime, the sceptical and the bewondered.

Exhibition organised by the National Gallery and Derby Museums Trust
