About

C C Land: The Wonder of Art’ marked the end of our 200th birthday year as we reopened the whole of the National Gallery in May 2025.

We’ve always told the story of painting in the Western European tradition, from the middle of the 13th century to the early 20th century. Alongside the reopening of the Sainsbury Wing, for the first time ever, the collection has been completely redisplayed.

The way we have displayed the collection from our oldest to most recent paintings may be familiar. However, rather than telling a single story of the history of art, we have introduced new narratives. So, you’ll find rooms with unexpected themes that tell us about the making of art, particular types of painting like portraits or flower paintings, or an individual artist. Paintings made in different centuries have also been paired.

Every week we'll shine a spotlight on one room in the Gallery. Join curators and educators as they explore paintings displayed in new and unexpected ways.
