The papers relate to the National Gallery's, ultimately unsuccessful, attempt to acquire Ruben's portrait of the Duke of Lerma, now at the Prado, Madrid. Includes notes on the painting, bibliographical references and photographs. Also contains MacLaren's handwritten draft report, dated 6 April 1960, on his visit to Spain to negotiate with Spanish authorities; the report was subsequently presented to the Gallery's Director and Trustees.
