Description
Correspondence and notes regarding the Gallery's application to block the granting of an export licence for 'The Virgin and Child with Four Angels'. The work is subject to an application for export by Julius Weitzner, who intends to sell it to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The reviewing committee on the export of works of art decides that an export licence will not be granted if the National Gallery is able to offer to purchase the picture for £150,000 by 13 November 1968. Memoranda relating to a Daily Mail article alleging that Weitzner made the Gallery an earlier offer of £50,000 for the picture.
