Saint Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist. She is usually depicted as a veiled elderly woman.
Depictions of the Birth and Naming of the Baptist usually show Elizabeth in bed; see Giovanni di Paolo's version of the subject in the Collection ('The Birth of Saint John the Baptist'), based on the Gospel of Saint Luke (1: 57-64).
The Visitation is the story of the Virgin Mary's visit to her cousin Elizabeth after the Annunciation; it is recounted in Saint Luke's Gospel (1: 36-56).
