About

We're very pleased to host 'The Burlington Magazine’s' inaugural David Scrase lecture, in memory of the late eminent art historian.

Our Director, Sir Gabriele Finaldi, will share his extensive research into Spanish and Neapolitan painting of the 17th century, particularly the work and drawings of Jusepe de Ribera (1591–1652).

A follower of Caravaggio, Ribera trained in Rome and subsequently became a painter to the viceregal court in Naples. Drawing played a central role in his art, revealing his impressive technical skills, equally evident in his use of pen and ink, red chalk or brush and wash, while emphasising the remarkable range of the subjects he depicted.

In 2016, Sir Finaldi published the first ever catalogue raisonné of the artist’s drawings on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Ribera: Master of Drawing’, held at the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, Spain, which he also curated.
