About

Celebrate John Singer Sargent in a guided talk and tour, marking the artist’s birthday.

Art historian Anne Gowan leads this tour, highlighting Sargent's command of light and texture, and his ability to capture personality in works like Lord Ribblesdale, a striking full‑length portrait of Thomas Lister, 4th Baron Ribblesdale, in hunting attire.

The tour will explore the bold elegance and nuanced realism in which Sargent captured society, atmosphere, and the subtle drama in everyday moments.

After the tour, we welcome you to Supporters’ House where you can reflect and discuss with others.

Your guide

After a degree in History of Art and Design, Anne Gowan interned at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham. Following this she lectured in History of Art and Design at Stourbridge College of Art and Stafford University, and she worked at West Midlands Arts, the regional base for the Arts Council. Since moving to London over 30 years ago, her career has been in media, although still maintaining her interest in arts with memberships of the main galleries in London. Anne became a Blue Badge Tourist Guide in 2023 with the ability to translate knowledge and enthusiasm into a descriptive storytelling style for an enjoyable gallery experience.
