About
What hidden stories might lie beyond the surface of a colourful masterpiece?
Explore ‘The Family of Darius before Alexander’ by Veronese through a new, community-engaged film commission.
Through the Gallery’s NGX innovation programme, we embarked on a series of creative workshops to understand what happens when we collide paintings from hundreds of years ago with 21st century mindsets. We then explored how we approach looking at paintings today.
This project has produced an experimental short film which reimagines Veronese’s painting in a modern context. It weaves together images of the original painting, modern day footage of Trafalgar Square, and AI-generated video vignettes that unveil modern stories visually aligned with the artwork.
The project was developed with valuable insights from young people from Elevate Youth Voice, offering fresh perspectives on the painting's significance, and filmmakers Rachel Davies and Daniel Saul of R&D Studio were commissioned to produce a film inspired by the creative conversations. The project was led by innovation practitioner, Emma McFarland.
The film is 15 minutes in duration and shown intermittently on our new large digital screen in the Sainsbury Wing Foyer throughout the evening.
