About

Early Masterworks Life Drawing Club lead a life drawing session inspired by our exhibition ‘Wright of Derby: From the Shadows’.

Explore the powerful interplay of light and shadow that defines Joseph Wright’s work. Taking cues from his 'candlelight' paintings, we'll use strong, single-source lighting to create dramatic contrasts, revealing form and emotion through the dance between illumination and darkness.

Prepare to capture the sublime, the contemplative and the theatrical in your drawings, as we delve into the shadows to find the light.

Discover other candlelight paintings in our collection, such as Hendrick ter Brugghen's ‘The Concert’ in Room 24, or Godfried Schalcken's ‘A Man Offering Gold and Coins to a Girl in Room 15a, after your session.

Materials are generously provided by Stabilo.

Early Masterworks

Early Masterworks was started by Y Chan from Hong Kong. She has a background in architecture and experience in arts engagement, therapy and cultural curation. Hosted within the inspiring settings of museums and galleries, our events create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for people of all backgrounds and skill levels to celebrate life together. Most of our events also serve to raise awareness and funds for various London-based charities.
