About

Join us for a festive online tour this Christmas season with Project Curator, Dr Carlo Corsato.

As your guide on this digital walk through the Gallery, Carlo will explore stories of love and family through four extraordinary paintings of the Holy Family.

This is the Christmas story told in four chapters – from the moment heaven first touches earth, to a family's recognition by shepherds and kings. We will look at the colourful works of Murillo, Crivelli, Titian and Veronese.

In Murillo, discover why Joseph's staff burst into flower, marking him as the divinely chosen protector. Watch as an angel descends in golden light through Crivelli's Renaissance architecture to bring news of a miraculous birth. Then meet Titian's young shepherd, dressed in red and white – colours that unlock the secret of who this child really is. And finally, in Veronese's large canvas, learn why Joseph stands in a strikingly elevated position above the three kneeling kings.

Carlo will also share insights into how Renaissance audiences would have read these paintings through their use of light, architecture, gesture and colour.

Whether you are near or far from the Gallery this winter, brighten your evening with this unique online journey through our collection.
