Join art historian Carmen Ripollés for an illuminating talk on Josefa de Ayala Figueira, known as Josefa de Óbidos (1630-1684), one of the most celebrated artists of the Portuguese Baroque period.
Carmen introduces Josefa, exploring her extraordinary life and diverse body of work, from intimate oils on copper to monumental altarpieces, delicate still lifes to dramatic religious scenes.
Josefa defied convention, achieving remarkable artistic and personal autonomy as an unmarried woman, workshop owner, and successful businessperson.
Discover how her paintings combine ‘feminine’ themes with bold, visceral imagery at this online Members’ talk.
