Transience

Painters and writers have often reflected on the transient nature of human life. Human mortality is often contrasted with the everlasting nature of the truths of religion.

Pictorially, artists express this notion of transience by using symbolic objects such as skulls, hour-glasses, extinguished candles and soap bubbles. (See the entries for Vanitas and Memento Mori.)
