Registers of offers
The registers record details of works offered to the National Gallery.. Each volume contains some or all of the following information: date of offer; the name of the person making the offer; address of owner; subject of picture; supposed painter; size and price; decision of the Gallery; date of reply; and general remarks. Each volume has an index to the names of those making the offer.
Between 1878 and 1920 the National Gallery kept a register of all works offered to it for sale by members of the public.
The registers were created by the National Gallery and are now held in the Gallery's Archive.
Your list will only be saved temporarily. Inactivity of more than an hour could result in the loss of your list. If you would like to keep a record of your list, we suggest you email it to yourself.
Your list of records will be sent to us if you request an appointment, and a summary will be included in your appointment email notification.
