Caption: ‘National Gallery Concerts. A picture taken during the first of the series of lunch hour concerts in the National Gallery. On the platform is Miss Myra Hess, the artistic director of the concerts, who gave a piano recital to the great enjoyment of the large audience who filled every seat, many people being content with standing room.’ 10 Oct 1939. Published in The Times on 11 Oct 1939. Used as publicity photograph for the exhibition ‘Not One Picture Shall Leave This Island: The National Gallery in World War II’ (6 Dec 1995-11 Feb 1996).
