Paint vibrant light-filled landscapes inspired by the vitality of Sorolla's art

Artist Jo Lewis will guide you to paint exciting compositions of light and reflection.

Weather permitting, this course involves painting outdoors. Please dress prepared for rain or shine. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for considerable walking.

All levels welcome. Materials and brushes are provided.

Sunlight and shadows is the second of two stand-alone oil painting workshops in the series Sorolla's secrets.

Tutor's biography

Jo Lewis is an artist and National Gallery Educator. She has a particular interest in working outdoors, her practice focussing on the movement of water in the landscape. Jo trained at Edinburgh University, Leith School of Art, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Valence, France, and later studied under Maggi Hambling in London. Recent projects include a large-scale commission for Paris Baguette’s flagship store in Beijing, and in London, for the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. During a Residency at Aldeburgh Festival in 2015 she made, ‘Four Seas’, which is now in the Royal College of Music’s permanent collection In September 2017, supported by the Arts Council, she was invited on a residency to south-west China. Jo teaches at the National Gallery and Dulwich Picture Gallery.
