This study day supports the Art and Design curriculum by increasing pupils’ proficiency in the handling of different materials such as acrylic paint and canvas boards. Students will also develop a critical understanding of portraiture through the visual investigation of a selection of portraits from the 1400s–1700s.

Working with portraiture artists Robin-Lee Hall and Sadie Lee, students will explore the process of creating a portrait from preparation to painting. Learners will begin an acrylic portrait based on a chosen painting from the collection.

After drawing out on canvas boards (traced if necessary), the artists will guide students through a basic colour palette related to colours that the original artist would have used. Through a step by step demonstration learners will be guided in techniques for mixing and blending.
