The dramatic lighting and powerful storytelling of Caravaggio’s paintings transformed 17th-century art. Painters such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Gerrit van Honthorst and others imitated the intense naturalism and emotional charge of Caravaggio’s style in works that are highly innovative in their own right.

Art critic Waldemar Januszczak joins Letizia Treves, curator of Beyond Caravaggio, to discuss why Caravaggio’s paintings inspired a whole generation of painters.
