About the trail

This trail looks at six pictures from the collection which bring to life the story of the Nativity, inviting us to share the emotions and joyous celebrations of the original Christmas.

Who is the trail for?

It is aimed at adults, though families with children can enjoy discovering the paintings together.

The Nativity

The Christmas period is the time when Christians celebrate their joy at the birth of Jesus. They believe that his birth fulfilled the Old Testament promise that a Messiah, Christ, would be born.

The story of the Nativity has inspired artists to create some of the Gallery's most affectionate, gentle and intimate images – paintings which can be enjoyed by everyone.
