The National Gallery's social media code of conduct

The National Gallery houses one of the greatest collections of paintings in the world. Our social media channels are intended to be a space for anyone to discover more about our collection and exhibitions, and to share their point of view. We encourage all our followers to share their stories with us, and engage in discussion and debate on our channels. To help ensure that everyone has a positive experience as part of our online community, we have outlined a code of conduct.

Protect your privacy and the privacy of others

Please avoid posting any personal information concerning yourself or any other individual. Posts including email addresses, phone numbers, home or business addresses, and any other personal information will be removed from our social media channels.

Respect others in the community

We ask that you avoid using hateful, defamatory, obscene, or discriminatory language. Any comments or posts that harass others or that could be deemed as offensive will be removed. The user responsible may also be blocked or banned.

Refrain from advertising and promotion

Any links, images, or comments that advertise or promote individuals, goods, services, businesses, or causes will be removed. Please do not create posts or comments that serve as advertisements or promotional tools.

Stay relevant

Lively debate and discussion is something that we encourage across all our social media channels. We want to hear your point of view, but we do ask that, when joining a discussion, you keep on topic and don’t post comments, links, videos, or images on unrelated posts. We may remove any off-topic posts or comments, particularly if the same off-topic comment, link, or image is repeated multiple times across unrelated posts.

Intellectual property

We ask that you refrain from posting any creative content that you do not have a lawful right to share. Any copyrighted text, images, logos, or videos will be removed from our channels.

Points of views

Remember that the views expressed by our fans and followers across our social media channels are their own, and do not necessarily represent the views of the National Gallery, the Gallery’s employees, Trustees, and affiliates. Similarly, views expressed by any National Gallery employee, Trustee, or affiliate on social media are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Gallery.

Social media is monitored between 9am and 5pm GMT, Monday to Friday, excluding UK national holidays. We will do our best to respond quickly to queries submitted via social media, provided the query in question is in keeping with this social media code of conduct. It may not always be possible for us to respond to your query via social media.
