The Assassination of Saint Peter Martyr
On loan from The Samuel Courtauld Trust, The Courtauld Gallery, London, © The Samuel Courtauld Trust, The Courtauld Gallery, London

This panel depicts the attack on two Dominican friars near Milan in 1252, in which Peter Martyr was murdered. The woodsmen in the background echo the violence with which the saint was killed. A member of Bellini’s workshop based the outlines of the four central figures on Bellini’s painting of the same subject.
