Abstract

The Peepshow of Dutch artist Samuel van Hoogstraten is presented in the context of the artist's background and his other work. Construction methods of peepshows, a 17th-century phenomenon in Holland, are described. The only surviving peepshow of Van Hoogstraten is discussed in detail. A note on condition, treatment and display is provided. Details of the technical examination of the pigments, ground medium and varnishes are provided.
