The Annunciation
On loan from Ferens Art Gallery, Hull Museums, © Ferens Art Gallery, Hull Museums

Mary stands with her hand on heart as the Archangel Gabriel reveals that she will conceive the Son of God. Above them, angels encircle the Holy Spirit, symbolised by a dove and rays of heavenly light. This small, highly finished devotional work contrasts the celestial realm above with the modest, earthly scene below, complete with nails in the plain floorboards. The painting once belonged to Charles Gaspard Guillaume de Vintimille, Archbishop of Paris.
