Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione, after Raphael
Peter Paul Rubens

This is Rubens’s copy of Raphael’s muchadmired portrait of the 16th-century courtier Castiglione, who wrote a celebrated manual of court life. Not a stranger to court life himself, Rubens here pays homage to Castiglione, but he also honours the famous Renaissance painter. In so doing, Rubens claims his own place among the greatest artists in history.
