Summer 2012 offers a unique opportunity to view Titian’s ‘poesie’ in London. Together for the first time in 200 years, Diana and Callisto, Diana and Actaeon, and The Death of Actaeon will be on display in the National Gallery exhibition, Metamorphosis: Titian 2012. A fourth ‘poesie’, Perseus and Andromeda [external link], is also on view a short distance from the Gallery at the Wallace Collection, where it is on permanent display.

In addition, Dulwich Picture Gallery is exhibiting a large-format studio copy of Venus and Adonis [external link]. On display for the first time in more than 100 years, the painting has recently undergone an intensive restoration that has led to exciting new discoveries. The National Gallery also owns a copy of Venus and Adonis by the workshop of Titian, which is currently on loan to the British Museum exhibition, Shakespeare: Staging the World (19 July–25 November 2012) [external link].

Metamorphosis: Titian 2012

‘Metamorphosis: Titian 2012’ features contemporary responses to Titian’s ‘poesie’ by British artists Chris Ofili, Conrad Shawcross and Mark Wallinger, as well as set designs and costumes created by the artists for three new ballets at the Royal Opera House. This multi-arts project draws on Ovid’s powerful stories of change described in Titian’s masterpieces, revealing how these spectacular paintings continue to inspire living artists.
