Saint Barbara
Jan van Eyck

The saint sits in front of a tower undergoing construction. It is there that Barbara’s father will imprison her. The palm branch she holds in her left hand alludes to her martyrdom. The work is signed and dated on the original frame, but it is unknown whether the artist considered it finished.
