The Forest at Fontainebleau

The simplified forms of the trees are painted in broad strokes, using such non-naturalistic colours as blue and yellow for the trunks and foliage and pink in the foreground. The colours and sinuous shapes of the landscape are typical of works of the Fauves (‘wild beasts’), a loose-knit group of artists working at this period.
