Matthias Wivel

Matthias Wivel is the Aud Jebsen Curator of Sixteenth-Century Italian Paintings at the National Gallery. He received his doctorate at Cambridge and prior to working at the Gallery held posts at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York and Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen. His area of specialism is Venetian 16th-century painting, drawing and printmaking, with particular focus on Titian and Sebastiano del Piombo, on both of whom he has published widely, most recently with 'The Compass and the Mirror – Michelangelo and Sebastiano del Piombo' (Brepols 2022). At the National Gallery he has curated 'The Credit Suisse Exhibition: Raphael' (2022), 'Titian – Love Desire Death' (2020–21) and 'The Credit Suisse Exhibition: Michelangelo and Sebastiano' (2017), as well as co-curating 'Lorenzo Lotto Portraits' (2018-19).
