Initial Teacher Education

Since 2003 the National Gallery has hosted one-week Initial Teacher Education (ITE) cultural placements for trainee teachers based in London and across the regions

The one-week cultural placements take place either at the National Gallery or at an associate partner organisation. Trainees then plan and teach a unit of work around a painting at their subsequent school placements, which include pupil visits to their local museum or gallery to see the focus painting.

We currently offer cultural placements for Primary ITE students from the University of Roehampton; Nottingham Trent University; University of East Anglia; Leeds Beckett University; St Mary’s University, Twickenham; and Homerton College, Cambridge.
