A free festival of art, outside on Trafalgar Square
11am–1pm and 2–4pm, daily
This August, the National Gallery in partnership with Westminster City Council, will host Summer on the Square – a programme of free, daily creative sessions and activities to inspire you to create your own masterpieces
Art outdoors
Immerse yourself in our studio activities and be ready to sketch, make, move, explore and be inspired by the National Gallery Collection.
All activities take place daily, and are open to everyone.

Dare to draw
Enjoy space to relax with an easel or drawing board, sketch your surroundings and experiment with a variety of materials.
Create, collaborate and celebrate
Work together as a family, perhaps with other families too, and see what you can create. Celebrate being outside in Trafalgar Square and being part of the Westminster community!
Build your own gallery
Design structures to display your artworks and play with ideas of what your gallery of the future would look like.
Connect with our collection
At the heart of everything we do is our collection. Get to know a painting you may have never met before or try looking at it in a new way.
Try something new
Work with new materials, draw or be drawn, build and collaborate. Playing and experimenting is encouraged!
Pause to picnic
Bring a picnic and take some time to relax and enjoy the fabulous surroundings of Trafalgar Square at our tables just outside the tent.

Drop-in sessions
All studio sessions are drop-in and open to all ages and abilities. Spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis – you may be asked to wait during busy times.
