Mark-making and movement
About
Van Gogh’s dynamic paintings in our exhibition ‘Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers’ are loved for his vivid use of colour, as well as the dynamism in his signature and rhythmic mark-making. Taking inspiration from his brushstrokes in paint and ink, we will examine how Van Gogh captures movement and time by drawing different stages of a sunflower’s existence.
In this online session, Joanna Conybeare will lead you through a series of exercises to explore mark-making, movement, line, negative space and shape to capture sunflowers, clouds, and the rest of the world around you.
All you need for this session is a pen and paper. A felt tip marker or calligraphy pen is recommended, but any pen will work for the session. A list of suggested materials will be available in your Gallery account prior to the session.
Your Tutor
Joanna Conybeare is an artist and Gallery Educator who has worked in Primary and Secondary schools in London and the south coast as a teacher and subject lead for Art and Design. In her own artistic practice, she uses clay, porcelain and terracotta to explore the figure, enjoying the immediacy of the material that enables her to ‘draw’ three-dimensionally.
