Details of the acquisition of the portrait, with Lansdowne's reasons for disagreeing with the action taken by Poynter in acquiring the work. Treasury minute of 26 Apr 1894 limits the ability of the Director to make decisions on the acquisition of a work without fully consulting the Trustees beforehand. Lansdowne considers Poynter to have been wrong in acting without first consulting the Trustees.
