Description

The papers comprise Clarks alphabetically arranged correspondence files connected with the editorship of the series. They include letters to authors regarding the published text, along with discussion on the selection of appropriate artists, and the taste and tone of the series.

The correspondence also includes:
- Letters to artists regarding the - often lengthy - process of choosing examples for reproduction. Clark was also heavily involved with Penguin executives Allan lane and Eunice Frost regarding decisions over the design and production of the series, and this is reflected in the correspondence.
- Letters to lenders arranging for their works to be photographed at the National Gallery. Clark also contributed his own collection to be photographed - displaying his own personal taste, as he owned works by many of the artists featured, Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, David Jones.
- Lists, typed and printed drafts of publications and notebooks. Illustrations, photographs and glass plate negatives are also included.
