Folder 1: Catalogue exchanges; technical notes on National Gallery paintings; photographing National Gallery pictures. Folder 2: Papers concerning the Melbourne Madonna - in 1957 Martin Davies was approached by Paul Coremans (of the Brussels Centre) to help work on the Melbourne Madonna. Between 1957 and 1960 the painting was researched, and a series of scientific tests carried out. The results were written into a report which was finally included in the publication Les Primitifs Flamands, Melbourne, (I. Corpus de La Peinture des Anciens Pays-Bas Meridionaux au Quinzieme Siecle) which Davies was involved with writing. The papers include: Correspondence between Dr Paul Coremans and Martin Davies and others concerning the Melbourne Madonna; Research - Report of Mr Buttery on the condition of the Madonna and Child by Van Eyck, as requested by A.J.L. McDonnell; a note about the identity of G.F. Zink (a miniaturist & picture restorer involved with the cleaning of the Melbourne Madonna); an excerpt from the Daily Telegraph, 14 October 1922 concerning the Melbourne Madonna, by Sir Claude Philips. Extracts from the correspondence of Mr Frank Rinder regarding the condition of the Melbourne Madonna and additional notes by Ursula Hoff. Excerpt from press-cuttings dated 1906. Excerpts from books of reference. Scientific Reports: Reports of a series of scientific tests carried out on the Melbourne Madonna (intermediary and final) often in the presence of Martin Davies.
