Description

Correspondence between Robert Sterling Newall and Sir Philip Hendy relating to Newall's decision to bequeath his Kalf still life to the National Gallery; arrangements for the picture to be loaned to the Gallery, where it received minor conservation treatment and was on display from 12 Jan 1957-18 Jul 1957 before being returned to Newall's home; discussion between Newall and the Gallery over alleged death duty implications connected with the bequest; further loan of the picture to the Gallery for an exhibition in 1976, the loan is then extended and the picture is still in the Gallery when Newall dies on 17 Jan 1978. Correspondence with Tozers solicitors confirming bequest, press release. Letter from Sally Porteaus, niece of Robert Newall, thanking the Gallery for the copy of the annual report she was sent and expressing her pleasure that the picture is now on display at the National Gallery.
