Correspondence between C.R.Ponter of Christie's and Michael Levey discussing the potential sale of the Jan Steen picture by Christie's on behalf of the Allendale estate. Debate over the market value of the picture, which Christie's initially claims to be £650,00, meaning the Gallery would pay £275,000. Eventually a market value of £450,000 is agreed, with a price of £182,055 therefore being charged to the Gallery. Press release announcing acquisition on 25 October 1977. Disagreement follows between Patrick Linsay of Christie's and Michael Levey regarding the apparent lack of warning given to Christie's of a press release and the lack of acknowledgement to the auctioneers in the release.
