Description

Correspondence with Mrs Esther L. Pissarro, 1939-1940, re possible sale of 'Anse des Pilotes, Le Havre' painted by her father-in-law, Camille Pissarro, to the Gallery, its rejection by the Board due to limited purchase funds, its loan to the Gallery and subsequent evacuation from London upon the outbreak of war. Also re internment of John Rewald and possibility of Clark showing the Queen the 'Terre plein du Pont Neuf' picture. Correspondence, 1948-1949, re her husband's gift of 'Anse des Pilotes' in 1941 including a copy of Winston Churchill's letter to Lucien Pissarro, dated 30 Mar 1941, accepting the gift to the Nation. Also queries over the date of the gift on the Donations board, acknowledgement of Lucien Pissarro's bequest of three pictures in 1944 [TG, N05574, N05575, N05576], and correspondence with Dr Lucas Lichtenhau declining loan of two Pissarro pictures to the Basle Kunsthalle. Correspondence, 1951-1952, re Mrs Pissarro's gift of 'Un Coin de Pré a Eragny'. Correspondence, 1967, with Martin Butlin, Assistant Keeper, Tate re acquisition date for Pissarro's 'Le Havre'.
