While Frederic Edwin Church was exploring South America in search of new motifs for his landscape paintings, Peder Balke was mapping out the unexplored territories of the Norwegian coast for King Louis-Philippe of France.
This lecture will look at the general practice of sending artists out alongside explorers during the 19th century, together with the sketches produced by Balke during his epic journeys.
This illustrated talk will be supported by STAGETEXT [external link] live speech-to-text transcription, to provide access for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing visitors.
