Becker invites us into the world of a group of low-life, high-living characters negotiating the streets, narrow alleys and bars of late 19th-century Paris.

The film opens with the group enjoying a jaunt on the Seine just outside the city, and centres on formidable beauty Marie (Simone Signoret). Her forced loyalty to the criminal gang makes her love for ex-con-turned-carpenter Georges Manda (Serge Reggiani) forbidden. Marie and Georges must hide out in the countryside, and it is in this rural retreat that their love is finally able to flourish.

This screening with short introduction complements the course
A Longer Look – Manet's 'Corner of a Café-Concert' on Saturday 18 May.
