A one-day course at the National Gallery for Primary School Teachers focusing on creative cross-curricular planning using a painting as a central stimulus

A core element of the Take One Picture scheme is the coming together of the whole school to plan, experience and celebrate the project. This course is planned specifically with this in mind, offering an opportunity to enjoy time together in a world-renowned collection of paintings and to develop shared ownership of the Take One Picture project.

The focus painting for 2011–12 is Still Life with Drinking-Horn (about 1653) by Willem Kalf.

The course fee for whole staff groups is £55 per teacher and includes a sandwich lunch and light refreshments.

About the course

This one-day course for teachers provides inspiration and ideas for implementing the Take One Picture scheme in any school context.

Through a combination of short presentations, discussion and a workshop, the day offers:

  • An opportunity to experience the National Gallery’s collection first hand with a particular emphasis on the focus painting
  • Strategies for developing pupils’ skill and confidence in looking at and responding to paintings
  • A chance to explore the pedagogy and practice of using a National Gallery painting as a rich context for learning about art and through art
  • The sharing of practice in developing meaningful cross-curricular connections
  • Examples of ways of working with the local community and planning for learning outside the classroom
  • The opportunity to network with other teachers

'The whole thing was inspirational – it reaffirms the impact of art at the heart of learning and the impact of schools in an education for life.’ [Teacher, October 2010]
